Tatum Nevill signs with TVCC volleyball

Lady Cardinal volleyball coach Aleah Hayes has announced the signing of Tatum Nevill.

Nevill, a 6-0 outside hitter/right side native of Iola, is the daughter of former Cardinal basketball player Scott Nevill (1984-86).

“We look forward to adding Tatum to our roster, because she is a leader on the court, athletic and versatile both at the net and in the back row,” Hayes said. “Her competitiveness sets her apart and she will impact the team and program quickly.”

Lady Cardinal volleyball coach Aleah Hayes has announced the signing of Taylor Nevill.

Nevill, a 6-0 middle blocker out of Iola High School, is the daughter of former Cardinal basketball player Scott Nevill (1984-86).

“We are very excited to add Taylor to our roster, as she brings athleticism and height to our team at the middle position,” Hayes said. “She is quick and able to attack and block with force.

Brazilian volleyball player signs with Lady Cardinal

Lady Cardinal volleyball coach Aleah Hayes has announced the signing of Mariana Bezerra.

Though a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Bezerra spent the last two years at Gateway Legacy Christian Academy in Florissant, Missouri. She is 5-11 and plays the right side position.

“We are excited to add Mariana to our roster, as she brings both international and domestic experience to our team,” Hayes said. “She brings athleticism and versatility and has the ability to attack from all positions.”

Trinidad’s Eryn Airheart joins Lady Cardinals

Lady Cardinal volleyball coach Aleah Hayes has announced the signing of Eryn Airheart.

Airheart, a 6-2 middle hitter/blocker/right side from Trinidad, is no stranger to the Lady Cardinal program. Her sister Erica played for the college the past two seasons.

“We are happy to announce the addition of Eryn to our roster, as she is a competitive and versatile attacker, while being a solid defender at the net,” Hayes said. “She brings great athleticism and height to the roster and I believe she will have a great career at TVCC on and off the court.”

Lady Cards headed to national tournament

The Lady Cards are headed back to their mid-March home away from home.

For a 13th straight year and 25th time overall, the Lady Cards punched a ticket the NJCAA Women’s Basketball National Tournament with a 70-57 win Saturday afternoon against the Angelina College Lady Roadrunners. The Region XIV Tournament championship game was played at the Gold Dome on the campus of Centenary College in Shreveport, La.

Melton signs with TVCC volleyball

Lady Cardinal volleyball coach Aleah Hayes has announced the signing of Jade Melton.

Melton hails from Hayes’ home state of Missouri, where she was a highly-awarded, record-setting performer at Hallsville High School. She is 5-9 and plays the outside position.

“We are extremely excited to add Jade to our roster, as she will bring excitement and leadership to our team,” Hayes said. “She is athletic and competitive, so I look forward to how she will impact the program in a very positive manner.”

In addition to being a four-year letter winner and three-year all-district performer, Melton was four times named Queen of the Court (team award) and set no fewer than four school kill records (single-game, single-day tournament, single-season and career) in the 2019 season. She was also named her team’s Player of the Year.

“Coach Hayes was a big part of why I chose TVCC,” Melton said. “She is intense and determined to make her team the best volleyball players they be on and off the court.

“Another reason I chose TVCC was because of the people at TVCC and in Athens. When I visited, the players, coaches, staff and community were so welcoming. There was a family atmosphere I want to experience.”​

Lady Cardinals advance to regional semifinals

The Lady Cards used a 19-0 run in the third quarter to overcome a sluggish first half and jet to a 75-44 win against Jacksonville in quarterfinal action of the Region XIV Tournament at the Gold Dome on the campus of Centenary College in Shreveport, La.

The win improved the No. 1-seeded Lady Cards to 30-1 on the season and moved them into the semifinals at 1 p.m. Friday against Tyler (23-8). Tyler was a 77-76 overtime winner against Kilgore.

Cardinals bow out of regional tournament

The Cardinals saw their season end Tuesday night with a 76-69 loss to Lamar State-Port Arthur in the opening round of the Region XIV Tournament at the Gold Dome on the campus of Centenary College in Shreveport, La.

The seventh-seeded Cardinals closed the year 18-13. No. 10-seeded Lamar State-PA (17-14) moves on to face No. 2-seeded Angelina in the quarterfinals Thursday at 6 p.m.

The Cardinals got off to quick start, jumping out to an 8-0 lead. They led 39-33 at the half.

Lady Cardinals finish regular season with win over Bossier Parish

The No. 1-ranked Lady Cards capped a perfect 18-0 run through Region XIV Conference on the road Saturday afternoon, racing to a 102-50 win against Bossier Parish.

Now 29-1 on the year, the Lady Cards are scheduled to begin play in the regional tournament in Shreveport, La., Wednesday against Jacksonville (6-21). Game time is 1 p.m. The Lady Cards defeated Jacksonville in conference play, 90-37 and 84-51.

Cardinal Softball on 5-game winning streak

The Cardinal softball team is on a roll.

With a sweep of El Paso Community College in a four-game homestand over the weekend, the Cardinals are riding a five-game winning streak with a 15-6 season record.

In the four games, the Cardinals had 60 hits.

Friday afternoon a Drumgoole Field at Cain Park, the Cardinals swept the first doubleheader, winning 19-0 and 6-2. Saturday, they continued their winning ways, 14-0 and 14-1.
