Zero cases of COVID-19 in Henderson County Jail

By Michael V. Hannigan

The TDCJ Beto Unit in Palestine has 97 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to a report by KLTV. (Byline by Athens native Gary Bass, BTW.)

What about at the Henderson County Justice Center? Zero cases there, Sheriff Botie Hillhouse said during this week’s podcast.

Hillhouse said the jail population was at 335 Wednesday morning when we recorded the podcast. The average population in 2020 is 372.

The sheriff said there is a crew of trustees cleaning the facility 18 hours a day, disinfecting everything. The Justice Center is still closed to visitors and many court procedures are being conducted through video conferencing.

“We are still screening everyone that comes in the door, whether it’s an inmate, or an officer, or a judge, or whoever comes in the door,” Hillhouse said.
